  "abstract": "Alcohol has long been shown to be an important risk factor for both the occurrence of trauma, as well as complications and higher mortality among those injured. The large national study by Brock and colleagues1 in this issue of the journal adds another consequence of drinking: lower helmet use among bicyclists. There was a clear dose effect of intoxication with helmet use, with 45.9% of sober cyclists wearing helmets compared with 9.9% of cyclists with solely alcohol intoxication, and only 6.2% of cyclists who were intoxicated by both alcohol and drugs. These findings coincide with other behaviors (eg, firearm use, multiple sexual partners) that illustrate the use of alcohol in amplifying risks of adverse health outcomes in multiple domains.2",
