  "abstract": "Diagnosis made with an imaging technique is the result of two mainly sequential, variously and closely intertwined processes: image acquisition and image interpretation. These two processes may be separated in space and time for many imaging techniques, such as conventional radiograph and computed tomography. On the other hand, the unique relationship between acquisition and interpretation makes these two processes even more tangled up for ultrasonography. At the end of an examination, the sonographer has usually made up their mind and got a list of working diagnoses. Indeed, the sonographer performs real-time imaging interpretation during the acquisition phase through probe position adjustment and setting refinement. For instance, the sonographer may ask the patient to change their position or perform some dynamic manoeuvres to accurately interpret some ultrasound findings (ie, double contour sign)1 or to detect tendon subluxation or impingement syndromes. In addition, the detection of certain findings may prompt a change in the scanning protocol to maximise the diagnostic information obtainable by ultrasound. In the clinical setting of mono/oligoarthritis, the sonographer may decide to shift to a multisite ultrasound examination to rectify the diagnosis from oligoarthritis to polyarthritis,2 to reveal bone erosions,3 or to confirm the suspicion of a crystal arthritis.4 Adding to the complexity, ultrasound in rheumatology has a wide range of important clinical applications. Guiding injections, assessing structural changes of salivary glands, supporting the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis and detecting interstitial lung disease are some of the most common extra-musculoskeletal system applications. Even during a musculoskeletal ultrasound examination, a sonographer visualises many tissues (ie, from skin to bone) and, potentially, many pathological abnormalities. Mainly for these reasons, ultrasonography is considered the most operator-dependent imaging technique, and its standardisation process is still complex and demanding.",
