  "abstract": "A US cohort study of antiseizure medication in >8000 pregnancies adds fresh data to a familiar concern: the neurodevelopmental consequences of in utero exposure ( figure 1). Valproate lives up to its bad reputation, being consistently linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. But there are new signals. Zonisamide showed increased risks of neurodevelopmental, behavioural and intellectual disorders; lamotrigine and oxcarbazepine were tentatively linked to intellectual disability, and carbamazepine to behavioural disorders. However, small numbers for each outcome gives imprecise estimates, and disentangling drug effects from the genetic baggage of epilepsy remains challenging. Still, the message is familiar but important: remain vigilant, follow patients long term, and maintain a healthy respect for uncertainty when treating epilepsy in pregnancy, given the lifelong consequences of neurodevelopmental disorders.",
