  "abstract": "In 2018 the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority gave permission for the first mitochondrial transplants to take place, but until two blockbuster NEJM papers this summer we knew very little about the science, the progress and more importantly the health of these children. 22 women with pathogenic mtDNA variants have commenced or completed pronuclear transfer; there have been eight live births. It is both a triumph and scientifically fascinating. Both papers contain some curiosities. There was a reduction in normally fertilised eggs in the pro-nuclear transfer group; and two children who had pro-nuclear transfer had higher mutation load than the carry-over, which means that reversal can occur and could be a risk for having affected children in future treatments.",
