  "abstract": "Mediation analyses encompass a variety of approaches with the goal of understanding pathways through which exposures impact outcomes via an intermediary variable(s).1 2 While approaches to assess mediation have existed for more than a century,3 potential outcomes (PO) (or counterfactual) mediation approaches represent a relatively recent analytical approach to mediation. The PO approach has the advantages of being generalisable to different distributions of mediators and outcomes, can accommodate interactions between exposures and mediators and has more formal criteria and assumptions underpinning it.2 4",
