  "abstract": "Indoor radon exposure is comprised of two components—one residential and one occupational. Radon exposure has been classified by WHO and the US Environmental Protection Agency as one of the leading causes of lung cancer after smoking.1 2 The evidence for radon being a major human lung carcinogen was first obtained from occupational studies performed in miners and later from population-based case-control studies. The seminal research by Darby et al showing a linear and statistically significant association with lung cancer risk served as the basis for the European Union (EU) Directive of Ionising Radiation Protection.3 4 Indoor radon exposure is, in many countries, the main source of human exposure to ionising radiation.5",
