  "abstract": "Introduction A carotid web is an underrecognized vascular abnormality characterized by a shelf-like intraluminal projection of the carotid artery and has been increasingly described in neurologic and vascular literature over the past several decades. Despite growing evidence of a clinically meaningful association between carotid webs and cryptogenic ischemic stroke, particularly among younger patients without traditional vascular risk factors, no comprehensive assessment of the scholarly impact or evolution of carotid web research currently exists. This bibliometric analysis aims to identify and characterize the most influential publications in carotid web literature.Methods In the execution of this bibliometric-based review article, the Web of Science database was used to perform a title-specific, keyword-based search for all publications until November 2025. The keywords ‘carotid web’ OR ‘carotid webs’ OR ‘carotid bulb diaphragm’ OR ‘carotid webbing’ OR ‘intimal web’ OR ‘focal fibromuscular dysplasia’) AND (‘stroke’ OR ‘ischemic stroke’ OR ‘embolic stroke’ OR ‘cryptogenic stroke’ OR ‘young stroke’ OR ‘embolic stroke of undetermined source’ were used. Our results were arranged in descending order based on the article’s citation count. The 50 most-cited articles were selected for analysis. Parameters for analysis included the following: title, citation count, citations per year, authors, specialty of first author, institution, country of origin, publishing journal, Source Normalized Impact per Paper, Impact per publication, and impact factor.Results The keyword-based search showed that 182 articles were published between 1991 and 2025 on carotid web. The top 50 articles were published between 1991 and 2024. The top 50 most cited articles collected a total of 2889 citations with an average of 57.78 citations per paper. The rate of self-citations accounted for an average of 7.03% of the total number of citations.Conclusion The bibliometric analysis provides a quantitative overview of how medical topics and interventions are analyzed in academic medicine.
