  "abstract": "Objectives Introduction: Lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The early and accurate diagnosis of LN is crucial for improving patient outcomes. CD72, a type II membrane protein, acts as an inhibitory co-receptor of the B cell receptor (BCR). Our study was conducted to evaluate the serum level of CD72 in SLE patients and to determine if there is a correlation between its serum level, disease activity, and the presence of lupus nephritis.Methods Methods This case-control study included 37 female SLE patients. Of these, 27 had an established diagnosis of lupus nephritis (LN group), and 10 were free of nephritis (non-LN group). Patients were diagnosed according to the 2015 ACR/SLICC Revised Criteria. Disease activity was assessed using the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Serum CD72 levels were measured using a human B-cell CD72 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. We assessed the correlations between serum CD72 levels, SLEDAI, and other activity and chronicity indices.Results Results Serum CD72 levels were significantly higher in SLE patients with lupus nephritis (p<0.001). A statistically significant correlation was found between serum CD72 levels and several markers, including low serum C3 (p<0.001), high serum creatinine (p<0.001), SLEDAI (p=0.001), activity index (p=0.003), and chronicity index (p<0.001). Patients with lupus nephritis also had a significantly higher prevalence of fatigue, dyspnea, lower limb edema, confusion, and burning urine compared to the non-LN group.Conclusions Conclusion Soluble CD72 is significantly increased in SLE patients with renal involvement. Our findings suggest that increased soluble CD72 (sCD72) may serve as a potential biomarker for renal involvement, disease activity, and prognosis in SLE. It also may be targeted by future therapies.",
