"abstract": "Objectives Self-management education is a foundational component in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), promoting the achievement of therapeutic goals and enabling effective communication between patients and healthcare professionals. The objective was to develop a core curriculum for an educational program on self-management for Latin American patients with SLE: EMPODERA-LES.Methods Eight Latin American countries participated In the first phase, the educational needs of SLE patients were determined, and from there, guidelines were developed for phase 2, which evaluated the management of those needs in real life through interviews with eight patients from 5 countries. These patients had at some point had major organ involvement due to SLE and achieved prolonged remission for more than three years. Phase 3 investigated sources of information about SLE, involving 55 participants (patients, family members, and close friends) from 7 countries. A qualitative approach based on the phenomenological method was used. For phase 2, there were 154 essential themes and 67 essential categories. For phase 3, 148 essential themes and 41 essential categories were identified. Results The core curriculum for the EMPODERA-LES program was developed based on 10 modules, the first 7 of which were obtained from phase 2 and the rest from phase 3. The modules are based on a self-management education model: 1. Definition of SLE (given by patients in remission), 2. Treatment in SLE (pharmacological and lifestyle changes), 3. Coping with SLE, 4. Remission and low disease activity, 5. Family support and remission, 6. Daily life in SLE, 7. Understanding the healthcare system in the management of SLE, 8. Information sources for SLE, 9. Self-management strategies 10. Preparing for my medical visit. Conclusions The development of a socio-constructive curriculum based on the needs of Latin American patients with SLE, while also taking into account the hidden curriculum stemming from unofficial sources of information, enables the integration of an educational model tailored to the region’s reality.",
