  "abstract": "Although overall mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has decreased in recent decades, a similar decrease in the magnitude of cardiovascular disease-related mortality among patients with SLE has not been observed. Currently, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death in patients with SLE. Both traditional CV risk factors and SLE-specific risk factors contribute to risk. 1 SLE-related risk factors include SLE disease activity, medications, innate and adaptive immune dysregulation, elevated type I interferon, autoantibodies, dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein and oxidative stress, and abnormal neutrophil extracellular trap formation. Prior CV risk screening tools have been limited by a lack of SLE-specific risk factors.2 Novel CV risk prediction models in SLE have been developed but require further validation.3 Advancements in CV multi-modality imaging can enable the diagnosis, prognosis, and longitudinal monitoring of CV risk in patients with SLE;4 however, the lack of guidelines limits widespread use. Cardio-rheumatology is an emerging specialty focused on risk assessment, management of cardiovascular risk, and longitudinal monitoring of cardiovascular health among patients with SLE.5 Learning Objectives At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:Discuss the increased cardiovascular risk among patients with SLEExplain the current SLE recommendations for ASCVD risk assessmentIdentify SLE treatments that may pose a higher risk for cardiovascular diseaseExplain the role of treatment in reducing CV riskReferences Tobin R, Patel N, Tobb K, et al.
