  "abstract": "Introduction In systemic sclerosis (SSc), disease-related manifestations are expected to adversely impact patients’ self-esteem. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale-Short Form (RSES-SF) in SSc patients.Material and Methods In this multicenter cross-sectional study, patients fulfilling the ACR/EULAR criteria were included.Convergent validity was assessed through correlations between RSES-SF and the Body-Cathexis Scale, Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire (sHAQ), and five Likert-type questions.Discriminant validity was tested by comparing RSES-SF scores across disease subtypes, organ involvements, employment, and education.Test–retest reliability was evaluated in 59 patients after three weeks using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Internal consistency was determined with Cronbach’s alpha.Results A total of 100 systemic sclerosis patients (mean age: 52.4 ± 11.4 years; 88% female) were included in the study.The mean disease duration was 8 ± 6.3 years. 56% of the patients had the limited subtype, and 40% had the diffuse subtype and 4% sine SSc; 54% had ILD), 52% had gastrointestinal involvement, 29% had digital ulcers, and 13% had PH).We found a strong negative correlation was found between the total score of the RSES-SF and the Body-Cathexis Scale (r = -0.634, p<0.001).The scale was also significantly correlated with sHAQ (r = -0.427, p<0.001), GIS-VAS (r = -0.509, p< 0.001), general health-VAS (r = -0.388, p<0.001), digital ulcer-VAS (r = -0.352, p=0.001), and Raynaud-VAS (r = -0.307, p=0.003).Additionally, significant correlations were found with the Likert-type questions (Likert-2: r = -0.368, p<0.001; Likert-3: r = -0.463, p<0.001; Likert-4: r = -0.436, p<0.001; Likert-5: r = -0.502, p<0.001).In the analysis of discriminant validity, self-esteem was found to be significantly lower in those with PH (26.0 ± 6.6 vs 29.6 ± 4.4; p=0.044), in patients with digital ulcers (27.5 ± 5.5 vs 29.8 ± 4.5; p = 0.045), and in those with mRCS >10 (26.9 ± 5.5 vs 30.3 ± 4.4; p=0.006).Self-esteem was significantly higher in patients with an education duration of >8 years (31.0 ± 4.9 vs. 28.0 ± 4.6; p=0.003) and in those who were employed (31.5 ± 4.3 vs. 28.0 ± 4.8; p=0.003).The internal consistency was good (Cronbach’s alfa=0.780) and the test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC=0.952; 95% CI:0.919–0.971).Conclusions The Turkish RSES-SF is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing self-esteem in SSc patients.
