"abstract": "Introduction Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare rheumatic disease characterized by fibrosis of skin and internal organs, and vasculopathy, both contributing to activity limitations and reduced quality of life (QoL).Herein we aim to describe correlations between activity limitation and QoL in persons with SSc (PwSSc).Material and Methods In an ongoing longitudinal SSc-study at Karolinska University Hospital PwSSc report activity limitations using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). HAQ consist of 20 questions giving a score ranging between 0-3, 0=no activity limitation. Self-reported QoL was assessed with EuroQoL Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS), ranging from 0 to 100, 100=good health.Nonparametric statistics were used to analyze differences between subgroups and correlations between activity limitation and QoL.Results In total 207 PwSSc were included, 84% women with a median age of 60 years (IQR 51-68) and diagnosis duration of 2 years (IQR: 1-7.5). 79% had limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and 21% had diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc).The median score in activity limitation measured by HAQ was 0.5 (IQR: 0.13-1.0) and QoL measured by EQ-VAS had a median score of 63 (IQR: 50-80). Persons with lcSSc reported lower in HAQ: 0.5 (0.13-0.88) and EQ-VAS: 61 (49-79) compared to those with dcSSc: HAQ: 0.88 (0.13-1.57) and EQ-VAS: 69 (35-79.5) (p=0.04 and p=0.83).A moderate correlation between activity limitation and QoL (rs=-0.522, p<0.001) were found in PwSSc. There were low to moderate correlations between activity limitation and QoL in lcSS (rs -0.49, p<0.001) and in dcSSc (rs =-0.56 p=0.001).Conclusions A moderate correlation was found between activity limitation and QoL in PwSSc. As expected, more activity limitation was reported in the group with dcSSc. Interestingly no difference in reported QoL were seen between lcSSc and dcSSc.Reference Saketkoo LA, et al.
