  "abstract": "The collection of epidemiological data is important to identify disease trends and aid future planning. Consistently cited in the top five causes of disease and non-battle injuries experienced on operations, dental morbidity remains a significant cause of ill health and reduces operational effectiveness.1 Currently, the UK military uses the EpiNATO-2 (Epidemiology & North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) surveillance system,2 but its broad categorisation provides limited understanding of operational dental morbidity, which is further compounded by misclassification, under-reporting by non-dental personnel and duplicated incident reporting. Furthermore, with the last comprehensive study of UK military dental morbidity conducted manually over a decade ago,3 it is difficult to understand how deployed dentistry must adapt to meet the current operational environment.",
