"abstract": "Background Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) can support patient care. We are creating a knowledge-based CDSS to support self-management and facilitate timely review of people with Parkinson’s. Methodologies for capturing expert knowledge to incorporate in a CDSS vary.Aim To understand methods for capturing knowledge for CDSS development. Methods We conducted a scoping review using the Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation and Research type (SPIDER) framework to identify publications describing knowledge-base capture for healthcare CDSS development, searching four databases: PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science and Embase. Results Searches identified 10,578 records, of which 485 were identified for full text retrieval and 61 eligible for inclusion. CDSS purpose included assessment (e.g. of disease status or treatment response) and identification (e.g. of high-risk patients). The most common methods for knowledge capture were: clinical expertise/expert consultation (n=41, 67%); medical and/or clinical ontologies (n=35, 57%); and review of medical/clinical literature (n=11, 18%). No CDSS knowledge base included patient input. Conclusion This review supports our use of clinical expertise as a primary source of knowledge for incorporation into a CDSS to support Parkinson’s care. Ensuring capture of patient perspective will be an important next step to ensure CDSS-supported care is patient-centred.camille.carroll@newcastle.ac.uk",
