  "abstract": "Admission avoidance clinics are often used to urgently assess neurology patients, and in some cases avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. Our AA clinics aimed to review all patients within 2-weeks. The audit looked at the appropriateness of referrals over a period of 1 month, and whether alternative pathways could have been used.53 patients seen in AA clinic were assessed. Data reviewed included the source of referrals, their urgency, reason for referral and final diagnosis. They were evaluated to assess for the appropriateness of referral and possible alternative pathways that could have been used were discussed.The most pertinent finding was that 55% of the referrals made were felt to be inappropriate, with 68% of patients having other pathways that could have been used. 9% of patients should have been directly admitted rather than being referred to the clinic.The AA clinics receive a high proportion of inappropriate referrals, often to take patients from strained services such as first fit or general neurology clinics. Our data suggests a more thorough triage process could redirect patients thus allowing a more efficient use of AA clinics, which have become extremely valuable with increasing out-patient waiting lists and limited bed spaces in hospitals.s.mcgough1@nhs.net",
