  "abstract": "I am primarily interested in off-line learning during sleep and wakefulness: my research investigates brain plasticity, focusing specifically on the changes in behaviour and neural activity which occur after initial learning. I’m particularly interested in changes occurring while a memory is not being encoded, practised, or recalled. These can happen both during sleep and during wakefulness.In this talk I will give an overview of how Sleep Engineering can be used to boost health and cognition. I will first explain how Sleep Engineering, in the form of closed loop auditory stimulation that boosts slow oscillations, is being used in an attempt to slow down cognitive ageing. I will then explain the technique of Targeted Memory reactivation, how this can be used to strengthen target memories, and how this leads to long term functional and structural changes in the brain. I will then explain how sleep engineering can be used to reduce the arousal ratings of upsetting experiences, and finish by outlining a new project in which we are trying to develop treatments for PTSD and Depression using sleep engineering.",
