"abstract": "Autopsy without pathological examination (PE) is incomplete. PE consists of both gross and histopathological examination. To consolidate the relationship between histopathological findings and cause of death, there is a need for clinical history, communication between pathologists and forensic experts, and specialised training with adherence to protocols for grossing and reporting, especially in the context of the clinical and medicolegal autopsy. Electronic search engine PubMed was searched with the keywords autopsy, PE, pitfalls and corrective measures, cause of death and present scenario, with further analysing and comparing the results to conclude. A pathologist and forensic expert must be well-versed in the limitations of PE pertinent to autopsy examination. Direct and indirect factors affecting the gross and histological findings in the PE were elaborated with a thorough literature search. Histopathological efficacy increased multifold if coupled with corresponding gross features, special stains and immunohistochemistry. Most researchers concluded that histopathological examination is irreplaceable in establishing the cause of death. Other valuable aspects of histopathological examination in autopsy are quality assurance as an audit tool, student teaching and disease epidemiology.",
