  "abstract": "This essay makes the case that laboratory animal personnel are at risk of becoming secondary victims as a consequence of their work in animal experimentation. Through exploration of probable hazards including poor organisation, justice, traumatic events and isolated work, we identify key vulnerabilities for laboratory animal personnel of experiencing harm. Harms such as empathy-based strain, internal ethical struggle and social isolation. We then discuss the conceptual framework establishing these personnel as potential secondary victims and suggest concrete solutions that can make a significant impact on the well-being of laboratory animal personnel and the animals they care for.",
