  "abstract": "Background Recently in the UK, the number of working-age people economically inactive due to long-term sickness has increased. The economic impacts of health conditions on an individual are not well understood.Methods We quantified the economic consequences of major health conditions requiring hospitalisation for individuals using linked economic and health records – the first such population-level dataset for the UK. This dataset combines hospital electronic health records, Census 2011, birth and death registrations, earnings from HMRC and benefits records from DWP. A fixed effects regression model was fitted to control for time-invariant individual characteristics, controlling for background economic effects and aging, to evaluate the impact of health conditions requiring hospitalisation on earnings, probability of being a paid employee and probability of benefits receipt. Our study population includes working age individuals who had at least one hospital admission between 1 April 2014 and 31 December 2022 with a primary diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), respiratory diseases, diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), cancer or musculoskeletal conditions (MSK).Results All conditions resulted in a loss in earnings and probability of employment, and an increase in probability of benefits receipt. The conditions with the highest total loss of earnings for individuals over the five years following hospital diagnosis were stroke (£18,785 in 2023 equivalent prices), CKD (£14,721), and heart failure (£10,446). These conditions also resulted in the greatest decrease in probability of employment and greatest increase in probability of benefits receipt. We also calculated the total cost to the economy, based on those diagnosed in 2023, with cardiovascular diseases having the largest impact and we breakdown results by sociodemographic characteristics, which will be discussed.Conclusion These results enable a more complete understanding of the full costs of health conditions and inform policy to help individuals impacted by these conditions to remain in or return to work.",
