  "abstract": "Background Consistent epidemiological data confirm that Irish Travellers experience poorer health outcomes and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. Consistent evidence of racism and discrimination, and the impact of the social determinants of health (SDoH), exists, with cancer-related mortality accounting for 20% of deaths. Despite this evidence, little is known about Travellers’ cancer awareness or their barriers and access to health services.Methods A multi-method study was co-designed with Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre, a national Traveller organisation with recognised expertise in Traveller health. Recruitment and organisation of 22 interviews were co-led by university researchers and Traveller Health Workers working in Traveller organisations and Traveller Primary Health Care Projects. Interviews were conducted from November 2023 to February 2024, following ethical approval (RCPI RECSAF 191). Thematic analysis was employed to code and analyse data.Results Participants report that the deleterious impact of the SDoH on health, specifically housing and the lack of basic amenities, is significant. Impact for women includes increased personal stress, undermining self-care, and shifting attention to others may place less emphasis on their own health and well-being. ‘ So, I would neglect my health and make sure that they’re [ family ] okay. ….’ Reduced life motivation from the impact of the SDoH permeates everyday existence ‘… very hard to get housing. Same with jobs, when they find out you’re a Traveller, a lot of the times you are pushed to the back of the queue. Or your hours can be cut just to get you out of there because they can, or they’ll fire you because of it. And them things affects mental health and them things affect personal self-confidence and self-worth’. Conclusion Despite developments in Irish cancer policy, a significant at-risk population experiences structural inequity. Partnership with Irish Traveller organisations is critical across the life course.",
