"abstract": "Background The purpose of this review was to undertake a narrative synthesis of existing research that explored the experiences of refugee healthcare professionals and their integration into the National Health Service (NHS) workforce, particularly in relation to employment and professional registration processes. Furthermore, the review sought to critically examine the available literature concerning the effectiveness of initiatives and supportive programmes aimed at facilitating the employment and integration of refugee healthcare professionals within the NHS.Methods A comprehensive literature review was performed, using key databases (Cochrane, CINAHL, Ovid Medline, Science direct, Pub Med central ) to ensure comprehensive results from peer reviewed articles. The search findings were synthesised and presented in a narrative format by separating the themes individually. Results 91 studies were initially retrieved, of which only 7 studies met the inclusion criteria, with 3 major themes: personal barriers, institutional or structural barriers and enablers and facilitators were found throughout the literature. The findings were all interlinked with each other highlighting the complexity of situations of refugee healthcare professionals in their attempt to return to their career. Conclusion The narrative review highlighted the challenges and barriers that refugee healthcare professionals experienced during their integration process and transition journey when returning to their professional careers, joining the NHS workforce, and registering with regulatory bodies. Furthermore, the review identified a significant gap in primary research on this topic and emphasised the need for greater efforts to support the integration of refugee healthcare professionals, including the expansion of existing support schemes. In response to these findings, the author took practical action by establishing the ReSTORE programme in South Yorkshire — an initiative designed to facilitate the professional reintegration of refugee nurses and allied healthcare professionals, support their registration processes, and promote sustainable employment within the NHS.",
