  "abstract": "Background Consumer purchase data have considerable potential as a provider of objective information surrounding dietary behaviours at a population level. However, the relationship between food purchases and consumption can be difficult to elucidate due to the contribution of out-of-home foods, purchasing for other household members, and consuming foods outside of the timeframe considered. This study aimed to evaluate: i) whether the use of calorific screening thresholds could enhance the agreement between food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and consumer purchase data; and ii) whether the level of agreement or bias differs between people living with (PLWOw/Ob with) and without (PLWOw/Obwithout) overweight/obesity.Methods Participants ( N = 1788) were recruited into the STRIDE study via a retailer’s loyalty card customer database across a 1-year period (1 June 2020 – 31 May 2021). Participants with completed FFQs (spanning a 3-month period), shared transaction records, height, weight, and household composition data were included for analysis (N = 642). Estimated individual purchased nutrients (calculated from supermarket transaction and household composition data) were compared to estimated individual consumed nutrients (calculated from the FFQ data). Six calorific screening thresholds (introduced to establish participants who purchased a realistic proportion of their diet from the supermarket transaction data) were evaluated using the estimated individual purchased calories data:>0 Kcal/day; ≥500 Kcal/day; ≥1000 Kcal/day; ≥1500 Kcal/day; ≥2000 Kcal/day; and ≥2500 Kcal/day. Bland-Altman analyses were used to evaluate agreement and bias using weight status as a covariate.Results Agreement was found between objective purchase data and self-reported dietary intake at calorific screening thresholds of ≥1000 Kcal/day (energy, sugar, total fat, and saturated fat) and ≥1500 Kcal/day, ≥2000 Kcal/day, and ≥2500 Kcal/day (protein and sodium). There were no differences in agreement between weight status but differences in bias were present. PLWOw/Ob with consumed greater energy (19%), sugar (36%), total fat (22%), and saturated fat (25%) than they were estimated to have purchased at the retailer. PLWOw/Obwithout only consumed greater sugar (19%) than they were estimated to have purchased. PLWOw/Obwith consumed greater total and saturated fat than PLWOw/Obwithout.Conclusion The application of calorific screening thresholds based on estimated individual calories purchased may provide a valuable preprocessing step within the analysis of consumer purchase data, allowing agreement to be found between estimated individual purchased nutrients and estimated individual consumed nutrients. Differences in bias between PLWOw/Ob with and PLWOw/Obwithout reveal that insights into purchase and consumption patterns can be identified using consumer purchase data.",
