  "abstract": "Background Amid rising childhood obesity, the World Health Organization advocates preventing sale of foods high in fats, sugars and salt (HFSS) near schools. In England, local governments are introducing planning policies to restrict opening of new hot food takeaways near schools. This analysis explores the relationships between the number of food outlets of different types near schools, purchasing of meals from food outlets and intake of HFSS foods during the school day by adolescents aged 17–18 years.Methods The Diet and Eating Behaviours across Early Adulthood Transitions (DEBEAT) study collected data from students in the final year of school (Year 13) between September 2023 and April 2024. Diet data was collected using Intake24 online dietary recalls, with school and covariate data reported by questionnaire. 400 m buffer zones were created around school boundaries, with food outlet location data retrieved from Ordnance Survey Points of Interest. Exposures were counts of seven types of food outlets within buffers. Multilevel logistic regression analysed the association between exposure to each type of food outlet and two binary outcomes: purchase of each meal/snack from a food outlet of any type; whether the meal/snack was HFSS (>50% by energy). Analyses were adjusted for exposure to other food outlet types, school location, neighbourhood deprivation, individual sociodemographic and health-related covariates.Results 1,240 individuals, attending 222 schools, reported data across 3,065 meals/snacks within school hours (8 am–4 pm on weekdays). Of these meals/snacks, 20% included primarily food purchased from a food outlet, and 55% contained >50% HFSS food. Of the 1,240 individuals, 70% could access at least one takeaway outlet, 50% a supermarket, and 30% a chain fast-food outlet within 400 m of the school. Only access to supermarkets was associated with greater odds of purchasing food from a food outlet: OR 1.54 (95%CI: 1.02, 2.30) for exposure to 1–2 supermarkets, and OR 3.19 (95%CI: 1.75, 5.81) for exposure to ≥3 supermarkets. Weak evidence was observed of associations between access to chain fast-food outlets and takeaways around schools with increased odds of HFSS food intake.Conclusion Our findings suggest that adolescents are responsive to the presence of supermarkets close to schools, while takeaways have little impact on odds of food purchasing. However, the presence of chain fast-food outlets and takeaways may increase HFSS food consumption within school hours.",
