  "abstract": "Background There is no standard approach for population or individual level food and nutrient intake measurement in the UK. Nutritional analysis software with accurate underpinning food composition and sustainability data could enable quick and easy data collection.Aims To describe a validated online dietary assessment tool, myfood24, including the food composition database. Using the tool to collect diet and sustainability measures in a large, regionally focussed sample in a short time.Methods We undertook a rapid, time limited, regional (Yorkshire and Humberside) food and nutrient tracking survey ‘One day: Diet in Yorkshire and Humber’ using Facebook (FB) recruitment. Participants completed an online survey followed by a detailed measure of food intakes for the previous day using myfood24.The myfood24 large, branded food composition database uses back of pack nutrition information per 100 g product to calculate nutrient information, sustainability metrics and scores for High Fat Salt and Sugar (HFSS) products and NOVA processing.Results Just under £1,000 (£893) was spent on 3 FB boosts over 21 days. 673 participants completed the myfood24 one-day diet diary. Intakes of fibre (mean 18 g, SD 11) and iron (mean 9.6 mg, SD 5.0) were low. Nutrient intakes/day collected using myfood24 were similar to national studies using 4-day diet diaries and interviews. The underlying branded food database classified 41% of foods as non-HFSS but NOVA4 (ultraprocessed) showing considerable disagreement between these scores.Mean greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) were 5.9 kg CO2 eq/day (95% CI 5.6, 6.1); land use 9.0 m2 year/day (95% CI 7.6, 10.3) and water use 582 l/day (95% CI 551, 611). Regression analysis showed that for each additional 100 kcal consumed there was a significant increase in GHGE of 0.9 kg CO2 eq/day (95% CI 0.8, 1.1). Land and water use were also significantly increased with increasing energy intake. Adjusting for total energy, protein intake was positively associated with all 3 metrics. Carbohydrate was inversely associated with GHGE and land use. However, fat intake was not associated with any of the sustainability measures.Conclusion myfood24 is a tool which can be used by individuals, without training, to collect detailed reliable food intake data. Results suggest areas for improvement in diet quality. Diet is clearly linked to sustainability. The mean daily GHGE from diet is equivalent to driving an average car ~22 km/day.myfood24 is suitable for use by local and national policy makers to monitor and evaluate public health programmes quickly and easily.",
