  "abstract": "Background Increased remote working has led to greater screentime among adults. Previous studies in a Norwegian cohort have suggested that this may be associated with poorer bone health, especially among adolescent males, mediated through reduced physical activity. We examined screentime in relation to additional lifestyle factors important for bone health in the UK Hertfordshire Intergenerational Study, a population-based cohort.Methods Overall, 93 men and 172 women, aged 21–70, were analysed. Height and weight were self-reported and used to derive BMI. Participants were asked how long they spent watching TV or looking at a screen over the past 7 days. Total duration of walking, moderate activities and vigorous activities in the previous week was ascertained using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire; a diet quality score was derived using principal component analysis. Ever smoking (yes/no), high alcohol consumption (>14 units/week), educational attainment and number of comorbidities were also self-reported. Screentime in relation to BMI, physical activity, diet quality, smoking status and alcohol consumption was examined using linear and logistic regression, as appropriate, with adjustment for age, sex, educational attainment and number of comorbidities. Sensitivity analyses, stratified by sex and age tertiles, were also performed. Regression coefficients in the Results section correspond to standard deviation (SD) differences in outcomes per SD increase in screentime.Results Median (lower quartile, upper quartile) age was 56 (47, 60) years; screentime was 300 (180, 403) mins/day among men and 210 (123, 334) among women. More screentime was related to lower physical activity among the whole sample (-0.33 (95% CI: -0.47, -0.20)) with greater effects among men (-0.54 (-0.77, -0.32)) and in the youngest tertile (21–52 years): -0.51 (-0.75, -0.27). More screentime was only related to higher BMI among the oldest tertile (60–70 years): 0.27 (0.06, 0.48)). Associations regarding screentime in relation to diet quality, smoking and alcohol consumption were much weaker.Conclusion More screentime was related to lower physical activity, particularly among men and younger participants, and greater adiposity among older participants. Limitations of this study are that data were self-reported, potentially resulting in recall bias, and that directly examining screentime in relation to bone health was not possible as bone parameters were not ascertained. However, these findings suggest that high amounts of screentime may be associated with poorer bone health and health in general, especially among men and younger people, and associated with obesity among older people.",
