  "abstract": "Background Older adult homicide is a public health and social problem. Recommendations made by coroners following investigation into these deaths provide potentially critical insights into strategies for future prevention. While previous studies have examined recommendations on domestic and family homicides, there is a paucity of research specific to older adult homicide.Methods This study sought to identify the frequency and examine the nature of and responses to coroners’ recommendations on adult victims of homicides aged 65 years and older during the period 2001–2018. Cases and coroners’ recommendations were identified using the National Coronial Information System and recommendation responses were identified via publicly available sources. A pre-determined framework was used to assess the presence and nature of seven public health elements.Results There were 29 unique recommendations pertaining to nine older adult homicide incidents. The public health elements ‘countermeasure’, ‘level of intervention’ and ‘implementation strategy’ were present in all recommendations. Identification of ‘risk factors’, the ‘organisation directed the recommendation’ and the ‘organisational response’ was available for 27 (93%). The most frequently stated ‘level of intervention’ was for policy or guidance material, and the ‘implementation strategy’ was commonly an environment, product or design change. Recommendations were mostly directed to federal or state government departments, such as the police/justice department. Most organisations supported the recommendations (79%), with over half implementing or partially implementing, at the time of the study.Conclusions Research targeting older adult homicide circumstances, as well as barriers to implementation, is crucial to extend the preventative benefits of the coronial process.",
