"abstract": "Background and Aims Palliative care has been given greater prominence in clinical guidelines and benefitted from dedicated position statements calling for its integration into the heart failure care pathway. The impact of this remains unclear, therefore we assessed the current state of palliative care research for heart failure. Methods We searched conference proceeding archives of six major international cardiology meetings between 2018 and 2023 for presentations and abstracts related to palliative care and palliative care for heart failure. We also searched three major trial registries between 2010 and 2020 for studies related to palliative care for heart failure. Results Across 33 international cardiology scientific meetings, 39 (0.33%) presentations and 91 (0.14%) research abstracts were related to palliative care, and 20 (0.21%) presentations and 60 (0.09%) research abstracts were related to palliative care for heart failure ( table 1). Proportions of palliative care and palliative care for heart failure symposia presentations did not differ across years (p=0.879 and p=0.687) (figure 1a) while proportions of abstracts varied year-on-year, but with no clear trend (p=0.076 and p<0.001) (figure 1b). Specialist heart failure meetings had a greater proportion of presentations and research abstracts on palliative care (0.62% vs 0.24%, p=0.002; 0.38% vs 0.09%, p<0.001) and palliative care for heart failure (0.59% vs 0.09%, p<0.001; 0.33% vs 0.05%, p<0.001). Trial registries included only 12 completed, 11 ongoing and 2 withdrawn studies related to palliative care, representing 0.049% of all cardiovascular and 0.006% of total trials. Conclusions Despite a greater focus on palliative care for heart failure in clinical practice guidelines, research activity remains limited.Abstract 48 Figure 1Presentations (a) and abstracts (b) focused on palliative care for heart failure and other palliative care over timeAbstract 48 Table 1Frequency of presentations and abstracts on palliative care at international cardiology meetingsMeetingTotal outputsPalliative care (%)Palliative care for heart failure (%)PresentationAbstractPresentationAbstractPresentationAbstractAmerican College of Cardiology Scientific SessionsNA10754NA11 (0.10%)NA5 (0.05%)Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions Congresses4869977 (1.44%)3 (0.30%)0 (0%)2 (0.20%)American Heart Association Scientific Sessions3738193694 (0.11%)32 (0.17%)1 (0.03%)15 (0.08%)European Society of Cardiology Congresses45432078710 (0.22%)6 (0.02%)7 (0.15%)4 (0.02%)Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology Congresses2899506618 (0.62%)15 (0.30%)17 (0.59%)15 (0.30%)Heart Failure Society for America Annual Scientific MeetingsNA5315NA24 (0.45%)NA19 (0.36%)Total116666728839 (0.33%)91 (0.14%)20(0.21%)60(0.09%)Presentations and abstracts focused on palliative care and palliative care for heart failure at international cardiology meetingsNA: not applicable",
