  "abstract": "Calcium homeostasis is essential for vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cell function, and disrupted calcium signalling has been linked to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation.Plasma membrane calcium ATPases (PMCAs), which mediate calcium efflux, show altered expression in aortic cells after inflammatory cytokine stimulation. In mouse models, PMCA4 was downregulated in aneurysmal tissue, suggesting a role in AAA development. This study investigates PMCA1 and PMCA4 expression in human AAA tissue versus controls and explores links with systemic inflammatory markers.Ethical approval was obtained, and aortic tissue samples were collected from 12 participants undergoing open AAA repair and 12 undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting as controls. RNA extraction, reverse transcription, and qRT-PCR were performed for PMCA1 and PMCA4 expression. Clinical and biochemical parameters were recorded, and statistical analysis assessed expression differences.PMCA1 expression was higher in aneurysmal tissue compared to controls (3.52±1.89 vs. 1.35±0.99, p=0.001). PMCA4 expression was lower (0.68±0.44 vs. 1.29±0.89, p=0.04).No significant differences were found between groups in gender, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, smoking status, or Charlson Comorbidity Index (p>0.05). Age differed (75±6.7 vs. 65.1±9.8 years, p=0.01) but was not significantly associated with PMCA1 or PMCA4 expression (p>0.05). Baseline pre-operative blood results were also similar (p>0.05).These findings suggest altered PMCA expression may contribute to aneurysm pathophysiology, offering potential therapeutic targets. Further work should assess whether these changes are detectable in peripheral blood.",
