  "abstract": "Background BACPR standards indicate that Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) following Myocardial Infarction (MI) reduces absolute risk of cardiac mortality. Referral to CR should occur irrespective of clinical condition or individual patient characteristic (BACPR, 2023). Previous reviews have shown patients with certain characteristics experience lower rates of referral to CR (Grace et al. 2021).Aim To assess whether differences exist at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) regarding non-referral to CR following MI.Methods Admissions to UHL with STEMI or NSTEMI between February 2024 and April 2024 were monitored. Patient demographics were collected and CR referrals monitored via UHL software. Statistical analysis was performed comparing rates of referrals with patient characteristics including age, gender, ethnicity, marital status and first language.Results 347 patients’ data were analysed. 102 (29%) patients were not referred to CR (Mean [SD] age 66.1 [13.3], 63% males). 7 patients were identified as deceased or out-of-area. Mean age [SD] of referred patients was 65.7 [13.2] and 75% were male. There was no difference in age between those referred and not-referred (p=0.85). Differences exist in females (p=0.046) and patients receiving no intervention/medical management only (p<0.01) when comparing not-referred group to the referred group. Males were more likely to be referred to CR (OR 1.76, 0.96–3.24 95% CI). Females more commonly received no intervention/medical management when compared to males (p=0.004). It is also more likely for females to not receive any cardiac procedure or intervention than males. These findings support previous work that has indicated an inequity towards females and having access to CR.
