  "abstract": "Background The Cardiology 2022 curriculum deems ‘appropriate referral to and support of the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) service’ as essential to the practice of the specialty. This is supported by evidence options including work-based assessments (WBA), reflecting on clinical and educational events, and the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) online learning module (OLM).Aim To identify the status and supporting evidence for Cardiology Registrars’ (CSpRs) achievement of the curriculum’s CR competency in the Peninsula deanery.Methods In June 2025, surveys were distributed to CR teams, CSpRs, and consultants across the Peninsula deanery. A five-year regional teaching review for ‘Cardiac Rehabilitation‘ titles was also conducted.Results From 21 responses (6 CR nurses, 8 CSpRs, 6 consultants, 1 exercise instructor) received in June 2025, significant CR awareness and engagement gaps were evident. 52% were unaware of the 2022 curriculum’s essential CR competency, with 95% never using a related WBA. Resource engagement was low: 81% were unaware the BACPR OLM was an evidence option (only one of the doctors had completed it), 38% hadn’t accessed BACPR resources, and 48% hadn’t attended CR learning events. Practical exposure was limited, as 52% reported no doctor time with CR teams. No regional deanery teaching on ‘Cardiac Rehabilitation‘ has occurred in five years.Despite these deficits, 39% advocated for CSpR involvement across all four CR phases and BACPR standards. Qualitative data highlighted the CR team’s central role: providing practical experience, teaching, and developing interdisciplinary collaboration. Benefits included improved patient outcomes, enhanced teamwork, and departmental funding/expansion. Suggested improvements included: formal education (focusing on behaviour change), mandatory practical exposure, and addressing time/resource constraints.Conclusion Significant awareness and training gaps exist for CSpRs in CR. Formalizing practical CR experience and education will enhance holistic patient care and strengthen essential CR services.",
