  "abstract": "Introduction Atrial fibrillation and flutter are associated with significant global health burden due to the associated morbidity and diminished quality of life. Several countries have been witnessing a prominent increase in the incidence of atrial fibrillation and flutter over the past several years. Accordingly, evaluating the temporal trends in the incidence of atrial fibrillation flutter in the UK is of paramount significance as it enables risk stratification and effective tailored management.Methods Data from the Global Burden of Disease database was retrieved to evaluate the temporal trends in the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of atrial fibrillation and flutter across the United Kingdom and the different nations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) for the period of 1990–2019. Joinpoint analysis software was utilized to calculate the Annual Percent Change (APC) and the Average Annual Percent Change (AAPC).Results Over a span of 3 decades, an estimated total of 1,587,834 atrial fibrillation and flutter cases with a 53.8% male predominance was reported across the UK. A statistically significant decrease in the ASIR of atrial fibrillation and flutter was noted across the UK with an AAPC of -0.056 (95%CI -0.068 to -0.042, p<0.001). Further analysis revealed a statistically significant decline in the ASIR across 3 nations with the most prominent decline in the incidence noted in Scotland (AAPC -0.53, 95%CI -0.54 to -0.52, p<0.001), followed by Northern Ireland (AAPC -0.47, 95%CI -0.48 to -0.46, p<0.001), and Wales (AAPC -0.44, 95%CI -0.45 to -0.44, p<0.001). England noted a statistically significance in the ASIR with an AAPC of 0.046 (95%CI 0.033 to 0.062, p<0.001). Interestingly, a variation in the trends in the ASIR of atrial fibrillation and flutter was noted across England. A statistically significant incline in the ASIR was noted in Greater London, East of England, East Midlands, North West England, South East England, and South West England, with the highest incline noted in North West England (AAPC 0.125, 95%CI 0.11 to 0.14, p<0.001) followed by South East England (AAPC 0.122, 95C%CI 0.11 to 0.14, p<0.001). In contrast, North East England, West Midlands and the Yorkshire and the Humber encountered a statistically significant decline in the ASIR, with the most prominent decline noted in the latter (AAPC -0.11, 95%CI -0.13 to -0.09, p<0.001).Conclusion Overall, the UK encountered a statistically significant decline in the incidence of atrial fibrillation and flutter over the past 3 decades. However, further analysis revealed a statistically significant decline in the incidence in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales whereas England encountered a significant increase in the incidence with variations in the trends across the different regions. These results warrant further evaluation to determine the factors leading to these variations.",
