  "abstract": "Introduction Degenerative mitral valve disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Therefore, evaluating the temporal trends in the mortality of degenerative mitral valve disease in the United Kingdom (UK) is of paramount significance as it enables effective risk stratification.Methods Data from the Global Burden of Disease database was retrieved to evaluate the temporal trends in the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of degenerative mitral valve disease in the UK over the period 1990–2019. Joinpoint analysis software was utilized to calculate the Annual Percent Change (APC) and the Average Annual Percent Change (AAPC).Results Over the period 1990–2019, an estimated total of 21,107 degenerative mitral valve disease-related deaths with a female predominance of 63.5% were reported in the UK. A statistically significant decline in the ASMR was noted in the UK with an AAPC of -0.79 (95%CI -0.90 to -0.65, p<0.001). Interestingly, further analysis revealed that not all 4 nations encountered a decline in the mortality as Scotland actually witnessed a statistically significant increase in the ASMR with an AAPC of 0.40 (95%CI 0.18 to 0.66, p<0.001). On the other hand, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales encountered a statistically significant decline in the ASMR with the latter witnessing the highest decline with an AAPC of -1.34 (95%CI -1.78 to -0.91, p<0.001) followed by Northern Ireland (AAPC -1.30, 95%CI -2.11 to 0.58, p=0.003). Across England, all regions observed a statistically significant decline in the ASMR with the highest decline noted in Greater London (AAPC -1.44, 95%CI -1.56 to -1.32, p<0.001), followed by North West England (AAPC -0.93, 95%CI -1.09 to -0.77, p<0.001), and South East England (AAPC -0.85, 95%CI -1.00 to -0.71, p<0.001). The least decline in mortality was noted in South West England with an AAPC of -0.64 (95%CI -0.76 to -0.50, p<0.001).Conclusion Overall, the UK encountered a statistically significant decline in degenerative mitral valve disease-related mortality over the past 30 years. However, further analysis revealed a worrisome increase in the mortality in Scotland in contrast to the other nations. Therefore, further evaluation is required to determine the factors leading to these trends.",
