  "abstract": "Background There are limited data on the contemporary outcomes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods Admissions for UGIB were extracted from the National Inpatient Sample of the United States from 2016-2020. Patients were stratified by the presence of T2DM.Results In 918,925 patients, 287,185 (31.3%) had T2DM. Patients with T2DM were more likely suffer from chronic pulmonary disease, chronic renal failure, heart failure, liver disease and hypertension (p<0.001). These patients had higher crude odds of endoscopy but lower odds of surgery and interventional radiology to control blood loss (p<0.001). There was no difference in crude rates of in-hospital mortality. On adjusted analysis, T2DM was associated with lower odds of in-hospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.42 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.81-0.87). Adjusted odds of mortality remained lower when analysis was stratified by bleed type (aOR 0.88 CI 0.85-0.92 for non-variceal bleeding and aOR 0.60 CI 0.54-0.66 for variceal bleeding).Conclusions Patients with T2DM admitted with UGIB are more comorbid, but are less likely to suffer in-hospital mortality compared to patients without T2DM.These differences persisted on-subanalysis for type of bleed.Knowledge of these trends is important for managing this prevalent patient group.",
