  "abstract": "Objective Home parenteral support (HPS) is first-line therapy for patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF). HPS typically involves 12-hour infusions for several nights per week and adversely affects patients’ quality of life. While the impact of HPS upon travel in families with children on HPS has been explored, the effect on adult patients is unknown.Methods Patients aged over 16 years currently receiving PS were invited to complete a questionnaire on travel with HPS. Questionnaire statements were themed around psychological and physical capability, physical and social opportunity and motivation.Results 50 patients were included (72% female). The most common CIF classification was short bowel syndrome (n=29, 58%). 54% (n=27) had travelled with HPS. Patients on HPS for >5 years were more likely to have travelled abroad (p=0.002). Barriers included uncertainty regarding organising travel with HPS (46%, n=23), difficulty in transporting PS (80%, n=40), restriction to holiday activities due to venous catheter (60%, n=30) and inability to obtain travel insurance (32%, n=16). 66% (n=33) have not considered air travel since commencing HPS. Although 88% (n=44) agreed that travel is important for their well-being, only 34% (n=17) reported feeling confident to travel abroad.Conclusion Travel is important for our HPS patients, yet the majority do not feel confident or have access to adequate information resources. The concept of travel should be discussed during initial HPS set-up and comprehensive information provided, with a particular focus on air travel, travel insurance and seeking medical assistance abroad. Patients should be signposted to relevant support resources.",
