  "abstract": "In England and Wales, abortion rates have continued to rise since 2016.1 Over 252 000 abortions were recorded in 2022, and 80% were carried out by independent sector providers (ISPs) delivering National Health Service (NHS) funded services.1 Surgical abortions accounted for 14% of terminations,1 but with the skilled workforce largely located in ISPs, trainee doctors in NHS settings struggle to access teaching to acquire essential surgical abortion skills. Furthermore, the historically limited exposure and optional nature of abortion care teaching at undergraduate level has further exacerbated the situation.",
