  "abstract": "Emergency medicine (EM) has evolved into a mature academic specialty, yet research activity is inconsistent and opportunities to participate in research remain unevenly distributed across Emergency Departments (EDs). This paper argues that the next phase of academic EM should focus on embedding research as a routine component of emergency care rather than an activity confined to academic centres or individual enthusiasts.The paper reviews the current UK research landscape, including national policy, legislative support and established clinical academic career pathways, before examining the barriers highlighted by emergency medicine trainees. These include inequitable access to research opportunities, limited protected time, inadequate local infrastructure and a shortage of specialty-specific mentorship, all of which limit the development of future clinical academics.A strategic framework is proposed to strengthen research capacity across EDs. Key recommendations include establishing named research leads with dedicated programmed activity, embedding research within ED governance and induction, supporting participation in portfolio studies, protecting research time for trainees and recognising research engagement as a marker of departmental quality. Developing research-active EDs should be viewed not simply as an academic aspiration but as a fundamental component of delivering excellent patient care. Embedding research within routine clinical practice will strengthen our EM evidence base, improve equity of opportunity and help ensure that all patients have the opportunity to participate in, benefit from and contribute to high-quality research.",
