  "abstract": "Background/Aim(s) Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a leading cause of death in Europe (Gräsner et al., 2021). Early defibrillation using an automated external defibrillator (AED) improves survival, yet public use remains low (Perkins et al., 2021). Drone delivery of AEDs may reduce response times and increase bystander defibrillation (Schierbeck et al., 2022). However, little is known about how the public may respond—both practically and emotionally. Older adults, who are likely to experience or witness OHCA, are currently underrepresented in research on bystander intervention and emerging technologies. This work aimed to explore: 1) older adults’ views on drone-delivered AEDs, and 2) the feasibility and behavioural impact of AED retrieval during simulated OHCA.Methods Study one used semi-structured interviews with individuals aged ≥65 years to explore perceptions of drone-delivered AEDs. Interviews were thematically analysed. Study two used a simulation where adult members of the public (of all ages) performed CPR on a manikin guided by an ambulance call handler. A drone-delivered AED was introduced mid-scenario. CPR quality, AED retrieval time, and participant feedback were collected. Ethical approval was gained for both studies.Results/Discussion In interviews (n=12), three themes emerged: human-drone interaction, perceived societal benefit, and safety concerns. Participants supported the concept of drone AED delivery but expressed anxiety around AED use and leaving the patient alone during AED retrieval. In simulation (n=12), CPR was paused for a median of 112 seconds. Chest compression depth was consistently good, though rates varied. Participants found the scenario stressful, but clear guidance from the call handler was helpful. Both studies emphasised the importance of public training and emotional preparedness.Conclusion Drone-delivered AEDs appear acceptable to members of the public, including older adults. However, practical and emotional barriers remain, particularly regarding AED use following drone delivery.Addressing these through targeted education and support will be crucial for effective future implementation in emergency care.",
