  "abstract": "Background There is a growing body of international evidence highlighting the extent of police encounters with people experiencing mental health problems and distress. These interactions are complex, and there is a growing need for a more detailed understanding of how these interfaces work, how effective they are for people in crisis, and ultimately their cost effectiveness and sustainability. Recent policy and legal changes have come into effect, including moves to more collaborative working, changes to police powers under the Mental Health Act, and the ‘Right Care Right Person’ (RCRP) policing initiative, which is currently underway in England. It is unclear what impact these strategic and policy changes will have on other services (such as Ambulance Services) and on the mental health outcomes of people in crisis situations.Aim To understand and evaluate the implementation, delivery, costs, and outcomes of community multi-agency first response mental health crisis pathways in England in response to the policing strategy RCRP.Methods A realist study design, with an embedded observational mixed methods design will be used to evaluate the implementation, delivery, costs, and outcomes of community multi-agency first response mental health crisis pathways in four study sites in England (Cumbria, West Yorkshire, Avon & Somerset, South London).The study aim will be met via three workstreams to; 1) identify Initial Programme Theories (IPTs), 2) test IPTs through a mixed method approach and, 3) through conducting a cost consequence analysis within and between four study sites. Study sites have been selected for variation according to the population density, spread, deprivation, rates of detention using section 136 (S136) and different configurations of collaborative working between police, health, and other services to deliver mental health first responses.Results This study was funded by the NIHR HSDR scheme in 2024 and is currently being setup.",
