"abstract": "A most unusual submission for ‘The View from Here’ is a poem by Louie1 from Minnesota. Louie has chosen an original but powerful conduit in poetry to express his dread, anguish and frustration at the state of emergency care in his department. Sadly, he is not a lone voice; we are all more than familiar with the daily challenges of working in the ED. Emergency medicine has increasingly become the only port in the storm of failure of other healthcare pathways and primary care. In many countries, EDs now serve as the main gateway to healthcare. There have been numerous papers in recent years centred on crowding, corridor care, workplace violence and the inevitable well-being issues and burnout of staff that ensue from this unresolved state of affairs. Louie has encapsulated all of the above graphically in 46 short lines, a cri de coeur.",
