"abstract": "Although survival has improved significantly through advances in treatments for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), it remains the leading cause of cancer death globally. Dozens of novel therapeutics have entered the treatment landscape in NSCLC in the last decade with particularly impressive new options in immunotherapies and targeted therapies, creating an era of personalized medicine in NSCLC. As a result of improved outcomes, a new diagnosis of advanced lung cancer has becoming increasingly complicated with patients and caregivers reporting significant needs for understanding medically sophisticated information, managing physical and psychological symptoms, addressing financial concerns, and attending to caregiver needs. Simultaneously, data over the last decade has established improvements in supportive care through integrating a palliative care team alongside a diagnosis of advanced NSCLC, which has subsequently led organizations such as NCCN and ASCO to recommend involvement of palliative care for all patients with a new diagnosis of advanced NSCLC. In light of the improved survival, meeting patients’ palliative care needs over their cancer trajectory is challenging due to insufficient resources. Considering novel models of palliative care integration is paramount to patient and caregiver needs, as well as the clinicians caring for them. As a dual trained medical oncologist and palliative care physician, I will focus this talk on three areas: 1) Improvements in the therapeutic armamentarium of NSCLC, 2) Palliative care needs of patients and caregivers with models of integrating palliative care, 3) Future directions of integrating palliative care in oncology with a focus on training the next generation of oncologists.",
