"abstract": "Background In recent decades, emotional intelligence has been considered an essential skill for leadership performance (Goleman. Emotional Intelligence. Bantam; 1995) and has been linked to leadership effectiveness (Dulewicz, Young, Dulewicz. J Gen Manage. 2005;30(3):71-86). Both the corporate world and healthcare are embracing this concept over traditional concepts like Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and personality traits (Dhani, Sharma. Int J Scie Technol Manage. 2016;5(7):189-201). It is well established that health care leaders need to learn emotional intelligence in order to be effective leaders (Nightingale, Spiby, Sheen, et al. Int J Nurs Stud. 2018;80(80):106-117). It is also widely acknowledged that effective nurse leaders apply leadership styles based on relational aspects, with transformational leadership being the gold standard (Cope, Murray. Nurs Stand. 2017;31(43):6170).Aim The purpose of this review is to explore the impact emotional intelligence has on a nurse leader‘s ability to be an effective transformational leader, and determine what interventions are most effective in identifying, developing, and nurturing this ability. Methods CINAHL, MEDLINE (EBSCO) and ProQuest Health and Medicine databases were used to select relevant articles. Google Scholar was used to find other relevant background information. Titles and abstracts of the retrieved studies were reviewed to determine their relevance. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal skills tool was used to assess the quality of the studies. The review included nine study papers.Findings The overall findings of this review showed a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. Several factors were explored, but the link to education was the most prevalent, suggesting emotional intelligence can be taught to develop the transformational nurse leader.Conclusions/Key Recommendations Based on the findings of this review, developing and maintaining emotional intelligence in nurse leaders is essential for effective transformational nurse leaders. It is recommended that all leaders engage in leadership programmes that include the recognition and development of essential emotional intelligence skills. A competency-based framework is also recommended to provide evidence of emotional intelligence behaviours.",
