"abstract": "Background Marie Curie aims to increase their reach into hospitals to provide end of life care where people need it. Following a successful pilot with Marie Curie healthcare assistants providing end of life support in a busy emergency department, Marie Curie have extended their partnership with University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP), expanding the service to provide dedicated end of life care beds at Mount Gould Community Hospital (MG) and a Proactive Identification Care and Transfer (PICT) team.Aim To increase the number of patients who are supported to die in their preferred place of death and reduce the number of deaths in the acute hospital setting. The service model expediates improvement in end-of-life care with a particular emphasis on identification of patients who are nearing the end of their lives.Method The service started in January 2025 and the evaluation has focussed on the impact of the service on staff, patients and those close to them. Interviews have been conducted with members of UHP staff, Marie Curie staff, and focus groups with various Marie Curie teams. Evidence sources also include reflective sessions, diaries, and lived experience interviews with family members. Results The service has supported 297 patients between January and the end of March across all three services: MG, PICT and in the emergency department. The Marie Curie team at MG have been praised for their ability to talk with families about what to expect at the end of life, share expertise with NHS staff, and spend time supporting and reassuring. Challenges have included understanding roles and responsibilities between teams and processes for identifying patients. Conclusion In the first five months of the service, there have been significant impacts on patients and families who have been able to access high quality end of life care through this innovative hospital partnership. This submission will provide up-to-date evidence by the conference date.",
