"abstract": "Background North London Hospice provided a comprehensive training offer for all its staff, but review suggested it was reactive, responsive to individual requests and not co-ordinated between teams. It additionally did not demonstrate ‘specialist’ knowledge.Aim To develop a Learning and Development (L&D) framework that sets out the education and training that all staff require to fulfil their role competently and effectively. To ensure clinicians are competent and deliver high quality care and follow best practice. To provide guidance for managers and clear expectations for staff. To enable training to be appropriately costed and opportunities to be allocated fairly. Methods Key documents were reviewed to ensure the framework was evidence based. Hospice values, user feedback and a person-centred approach were embedded in a radical redesign of the teaching programme, using a considered pedagogical approach. Staff were allocated to four staff groups, registered clinicians, non-registered clinicians, retail, and administrative roles, with an additional leadership course. Training days were designed for each group and tailored to encompass recommended subjects and focus areas. Senior management backing was sought to support the implementation. Results The framework received positive feedback from staff across all areas. Clinicians reported a fresh perspective that challenged preconceived ideas. They felt more confident to use assessment tools and consider patients more holistically. The course design enabled staff to engage and apply research. Non-clinician feedback included: ‘ Interactive and involving training, it was so helpful and engaging, especially as I’ve never worked in a hospice before.’ The success also resulted in the review, redesign, and integration of volunteer training into the framework. Conclusion The framework’s impact was more than knowledge alone. Senior management were assured and staff felt valued as the hospice was committed to their development. The course design also allowed research and IT skills to be developed.",
