"abstract": "Background Securing hospice funding is increasingly challenging, with financial sustainability remaining uncertain despite government support. Fundraising has become vital, demanding innovation and adaptability as traditional methods fall short. Success depends on our people, yet the post-pandemic reality reveals widespread burnout, declining retention and disillusionment among fundraisers across the UK. Recognising this, we set out to create a plan that would adapt to the evolving giving landscape while ensuring sustained income generation for years to come.Aims To achieve sustainable and substantial income growth to support our hospice’s mission, ambition and elevate its impact, delivered in line with our values. Methods We prioritised building a resilient, dynamic and values-driven team. We redefined roles as well as team communication channels. A series of team-building sessions emphasised shared values, self-awareness and mutual understanding. By fostering a growth mindset, we championed agility, creativity and collaboration. Strategy development was inclusive, involving both our team and wider stakeholders, ensuring alignment and buy-in.Results A high-performing team with a culture that is driven, compassionate, empowering and supportive – where collaboration is not only expected but embedded.Board-approved, bold strategy centred on relationship fundraising with principles-led approach and removing rigid financial targets.A transformative team mindset, enabling innovation, accountability and resilience.Stronger organisational trust and understanding of fundraising.Successful recruitment and improved retention. Conclusion ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’ encapsulates our journey. By prioritising team development and fostering a strong culture, we crafted a strategy that is authentic, innovative and impactful. Early outcomes demonstrate financial gains and reaffirm the value of investing in people first to secure sustainable success.",
