"abstract": "Living with a life-limiting diagnosis can reduce a person’s ability to engage in meaningful activity, resulting in a decline in quality of life and independence. Breakfast Club provides an opportunity for people to feel empowered, enabled, and engage as a person not a condition. Objectives Increase opportunity for participation in everyday meaningful activity.Combat social isolation.Improve mood, wellbeing and engagement.Reduce anxieties around discharge home, and coping with routine.Provide dignity and control in uncertain times.A more holistic understanding of a patient’s functional and social needs helps to support with empowerment, enablement and sustained identity during end-of-life care.Methodology An occupational therapy led holistic assessment based on functional, psychosocial, and emotional needs, identifying people who would benefit. An open communal space provides a non-clinical environment with a view of gardens, and practical set up to maximise scope for functional engagement, and socialising. Results Attendance ranges from 2-4 people each week. 100% wished to return. A non-standardised qualitative questionnaire is used to capture feedback. Comments consistently indicate improvement in mood, a value on adding structure and routine, and enjoyment in meeting other people. Feedback received: ‘ Without a doubt made me feel much better’; ‘Felt uplifted, looking forward to the week’. People have formed friendships which lasted outside the Breakfast Club, offering emotional support and companionship. Conclusion Breakfast Club offers a chance for individuals to connect on a personal level, improving mood, and combating isolation. Opportunities to participate in everyday meaningful activity provide routine, scope for functional practice and reviews to support improved discharge plans. A rehabilitative approach involving the whole caring team promotes a better understanding of non-medicalised person-centred approaches to palliative care.",
