"abstract": "Background At the hospice, outside of café opening hours, patients, visitors and staff were unable to purchase food or drink, and there are no shops within a mile of the hospice.Aim To provide a mobile shopping experience for patients, visitors and staff, within the clinical environment, enabling them to acquire items of confectionery, entertainment, gifts and useful items, and particularly for patients to do so with independence and control.Method Collaboration was required across hospice teams. With fundraising support, sponsorship was obtained enabling the purchase of a trolley that meets hospice requirements. Collaboration with Health and Safety and Finance ensured necessary processes and procedures such as wholesale accounts, float procedures, risk assessments and stock obtainment. With Volunteer Coordination and Learning and Development support seven ‘Activity and Engagement’ volunteers were recruited to run the trolley and trained in established procedures such as recording, cleaning, date checking, cash handling, remerchandising, and safe display. Results Since launch in August 2024, a once-a-day trolley service runs Monday – Friday in the inpatient unit, day hospice and staff hubs. Feedback on the service, collected from 77 staff members, rates the experience as 100% positive. 94% perceive the trolley to enhance patient/visitor experience, with the remaining unsure. Feedback highlights the convenience, normality and independence that the ‘Sweets and Treats Trolley’ provides for patients, in addition to something to look forward to and a welcome distraction. Furthermore, patients were reported to benefit from the interaction and connection with the volunteers providing the service. Conclusion The ‘Sweets and Treats Trolley’ is a great success. It is an established service and has become a warmly welcomed, integral part of the day for those at the hospice, with great benefits observed and reported. The intention is to expand the volunteering team to enable seven days of this mobile shopping experience within the clinical environment.",
