  "abstract": "Background Treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is aimed at improving symptoms, particularly daytime sleepiness. The Epworth sleepiness score (ESS) is used to assess treatment response, but as a subjective measure is susceptible to the placebo effect. This study estimates the placebo effect of mandibular advancement devices (MAD).Discussion Seven studies were identified that included a sham device and reported pre & post ESS. Active MAD resulted in a 4.2-point improvement in ESS, compared to a 1.8-point improvement with sham devices (table 1).
