"abstract": "Despite substantial research examining the link between eating disorders and sleep pathology, this relationship remains insufficiently explored in subclinical binge eating (BE) populations. This study investigates whether young community members without a formal diagnosis but at risk due to moderate-to-high BE symptoms also exhibit sleep difficulties. Additionally, the study explores the role low mood and worry play in the relationship between sleep disturbance and binge eating.Sixty-nine participants (age: M = 21.00, SD = 3.19) were recruited based on low or moderate-to-high scores on the Binge Eating Scale (Gormally et al., 1982). Participants completed validated psychological assessments on mood, sleep, and disordered eating patterns. The Camntech Motion Watch 8 was used to extract sleep parameters (i.e., total sleep time, sleep efficiency, fragmentation index, and night-to-night variability in sleep time and fragmentation index) during a 7-day protocol.Contrary to our predictions, we found no group differences in actigraphy sleep parameters. The moderate-to-high binge eating group showed worse sleep quality when measured via self-report (t(61) = -4.996, p < .001), as well as lower mood (t(67) = -6.573, p < .001) and enhanced worry (t(67) = -2.944, p = .004). Mediation analysis revealed that both low mood and worry partially mediated the relationship between sleep quality and binge eating across the sample.Aligning with clinical population findings, young individuals at risk of binge eating disorder experience sleep difficulties, although these may not be sufficiently severe to be detected by actigraphy. Partial mediation by low mood highlights the importance of depressive symptoms in the relationship between low quality sleep and binge eating symptoms.",
