"abstract": "Introduction Poor sleep among adolescents is a growing public health concern. However, existing interventions often lack stakeholder input during development, potentially limiting their effectiveness and acceptability. This study used Photovoice, an arts-based participatory method, to engage adolescents, parents, and teachers in identifying barriers, facilitators, and strategies to improve adolescent sleep. Methods The study was conducted in three Scottish schools between January and November 2024. Forty-two adolescents aged 11–15 years (M = 13.1; 56% female) participated in the multistage study including photography tasks, participatory workshops, photo-elicitation interviews (n = 36), and a school exhibition. Additional focus groups were held with parents (n = 14) and teaching staff (n = 15). Data from interviews, workshops, focus groups, and exhibition feedback were thematically analysed, with content analysis of photographs. Themes were mapped onto the socioecological model to identify leverage points and potential intervention targets. Results Sleep was influenced by factors across all socioecological levels: intrapersonal (knowledge, beliefs, self-efficacy, neurodiversity), interpersonal (parenting practices, peer influences), institutional (school schedules and curricula), and societal (social norms, social media, health and education policy). Participants proposed a range of strategies including sleep education for students and parents, peer-led initiatives, use of social media influencers, and more flexible school scheduling. Conclusions Photovoice proved an effective method for giving voice to young people and engaging adolescents, providing context-specific insights into the complexity of adolescent sleep. Findings highlight the need for integrated, multi-level interventions that combine education, family and peer support, and systemic change. These results will inform the co-design of an adolescent sleep health intervention.",
