"abstract": "Introduction The UK is facing a profound sleep crisis, with nine in ten adults experiencing sleep issues and millions living with undiagnosed sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnoea. This crisis stems from decades of governmental inaction on sleep health, despite clear evidence linking poor sleep to serious health problems. Methods This report draws on a comprehensive review of existing literature and new research conducted by The Sleep Charity, including a survey of 2,000 adults and Freedom of Information requests to NHS Trusts regarding the availability of CBT-I. The survey aimed to assess the prevalence and impact of sleep issues, while the FOI requests evaluated the accessibility of recommended treatments. Results The survey revealed that nearly half of adults are getting less than the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep, with 9% sleeping four hours or less. Approximately 14 million adults may be suffering in silence with undiagnosed insomnia. Only 12% of NHS Trusts offer both face-to-face and digital CBT-I, highlighting a significant treatment gap. The research also found that sleep issues are contributing to health inequalities.Discussion Urgent action is required to address the sleep crisis in the UK. The report calls for the creation of a National Sleep Strategy, including public health campaigns focused on sleep education, embedding sleep advice into routine health interactions, and ensuring the availability of NICE-approved treatments for insomnia and sleep apnoea in all NHS Trusts. Addressing sleep poverty through practical support measures is also essential.",
